New School Year, Same Oral Health Routine
Just because your child is required to wear a face mask in school doesn’t mean that their oral health is no longer a priority! Even though your child’s smile is covered for the time being, remind them to always brush their teeth before school and before bed at a minimum. Make sure to explain the importance of good oral hygiene and how it can help prevent problems such as cavities. Parents can lead by example by inviting their child to brush their teeth at the same time. This way parents can also monitor how effective their child’s brushing is and give them some pointers if needed.
Face Masks In Schools
Some experts believe that there is a connection between the consistent use of face masks and dry mouth. An increase in dryness of the mouth can lead to buildup of bad bacteria and result in oral problems. Our team suggests trying to pack foods that will stimulate saliva production in your child’s lunch. This will help to help clean their teeth and keep their mouth moist while they’re in school. We recommend the following snacks:
- Apple slices
- Celery and/or carrot sticks
- Watermelon
- Soup
- Sugar-free hard candies
