Is It Okay To Brush After You Eat?

If you have had an emergency or an intentional tooth extraction, the fact is that your oral cavity is in a delicate state. Rest assured, our team at Simply Wellness Dental is here to provide you with detailed care instructions to help you on your way to a speedy and healthy recovery. After your tooth extraction, there are a few things we recommend to eat and to avoid.

What To Eat

Soft-Serve Ice Cream – this is a great option for those who do not have sensitive teeth. Ice cream – specifically soft-serve is cool and soft enough to eat comfortably. The cold can help to minimize any natural swelling occurring in the mouth.

Yogurt is also another great option. You can add a few small soft pieces of fruit. Just be sure to avoid any granola, nuts or toppings with crunch, as these have sharp edges and can irritate the mouth or cause more damage.

Smoothies with fresh fruits and veggies are a great way to get your nutrients! The coolness of a smoothie can also help with any swelling or discomfort you are experiencing.

Apple Sauce – smooth, easy to eat and delicious!

What Not To Eat

Spicy and Acidic Foods as they can irritate sensitive areas in your mouth.

Crunchy Foods are too abrasive to consume as the little bits can get stuck in crevices and cause more discomfort.

Straws should be avoided to consume any drinks as the suction can harm sensitive areas in your mouth too.

Post-Extraction Reminders

Simply Wellness Dental is here to help you every step of the way! We recommend sticking to soft and cool foods until we direct otherwise. This way your oral health is on the right track to recovery! For questions about oral health procedures or post-care, contact our experienced and professional dental office in Burnaby.

Three Questions To Ask Your Dentist During Your Next Visit

We are constantly being reminded about the importance of routine dental exams and that we should brush our teeth at least twice a day. However, oral health is so much more than checkups and brushing. Did you know much of our overall health is linked to our oral health?  Our team at Simply Wellness Dental encourages patients to ask questions, especially if you have any concerns. Here are a few questions you should ask your dentist during your next routine visit!

How Can I Improve My Oral Hygiene?

Dentists aren’t with you at home to observe your everyday habits that affect oral health which is why it’s important to know how to take care of your smile yourself. Maintaining good nutrition will help strengthen your gums and teeth. Stray from sugary snacks and drinks, as they can cause tooth decay. Limiting alcohol and eliminating tobacco can improve your smile’s appearance, as it causes stained teeth and gum line recession. Being mindful of your mouth will allow you to spot anything out of the ordinary such as gum sensitivity, sores that heal slowly, or constant bad breath.

What Can Be Done About My Tooth Sensitivity?

Your daily dental routines should not be a challenge or cause any pain. Even if you feel the slightest bit of discomfort, make sure to tell your dentist. Tooth sensitivity can be caused by overzealous brushing, tooth grinding, certain treatments you may be undergoing, or gum disease. Depending on the cause, your dentist will be able to give suggestions on how to relieve it.

How Can I Improve My Smile?

Whether it’s tooth whitening or Invisalign you are seeking, don’t be shy to ask your dentist these questions. They are there to provide optimal care. Your dentist can spot oral problems early on and prevent them from becoming more severe. They can also give you the beautiful smile you’ve been dreaming of. From cosmetic dentistry services to Invisalign, we are here for you and your smile!

Tips To Get Rid Of Bad Breath For Good

Halitosis, commonly known as bad breath, is usually associated with poor oral hygiene. The good news is that there are ways for you to alleviate bad breath permanently. Here are some tips we recommend for keeping your breath minty fresh.

Brush And Floss Often

Poor oral hygiene is one of the reasons for bad breath, but only 4 percent of Canadians follow the proper oral hygiene routine. If you don’t brush correctly, dental plaque will collect bacteria that ultimately leads to bad breath. You can avoid that by brushing your teeth twice a day and flossing once a day, preferably at night.

Our Burnaby dentist recommends you brush your teeth in the morning and at night. You should note to not overdo it because brushing too hard will only wear down your enamel. Choosing a soft bristle toothbrush is also recommended.

Use Mouthwash

Mouthwash can be a great adjunct to your oral hygiene routine. Mouthwash also gives your teeth an extra layer of protection. Make sure you choose an alcohol free mouthwash that kills germs causing bad breath.

Scrape Your Tongue

Your tongue accumulates bacteria which leads to bad breath. Gently brush your tongue to remove bacteria, dead cells, and food debris.

Avoid Dry Mouth

Beverages like alcohol, coffee, and soft drinks can lead to a dry mouth. You can stimulate saliva by chewing gum, we recommend choosing a sugar-free kind. Drinking plenty of water also helps with a dry mouth.

Change Your Diet

Foods like onion and garlic are common culprits when it comes to bad breath. Your diet low in sugar will also help prevent bad breath.

Change Your Toothbrush Regularly

Once your toothbrush becomes frayed, you should change it. It is also advisable to change your toothbrush after every three months to avoid bacteria accumulation.

Schedule Regular Dental Checkups

Regular dental checkups are crucial for maintaining good oral hygiene. We recommend scheduling dental visits twice a year at our Burnaby dental office. During the checkup, the dentist removes plaque that causes bad breath. With the dental checkups, it will be easy to identify and correct any oral health issues you may have before it gets worse.

How To Level Up Your Oral Hygiene Routine

15 Jun 2021 DENTAL

Taking care of your oral hygiene is an ongoing process, and the steps that you take to improve your oral health will also help your overall health. At Simply Wellness Dental, oral hygiene is our passion, and we are dedicated to giving you tools and tips to achieve a healthier smile. These tips are great ways to help boost your oral hygiene.

Brushing Your Teeth Properly

Brushing your teeth is the tried and true way to reduce plaque and germs. However, just because you’re brushing your teeth does not mean that you are brushing properly. You should brush your teeth twice a day at least for two to three minutes each time. It is also important to practice proper circular brushing motions to effectively clean the teeth. Even if brushing your teeth is already a normal part of your routine, it can’t hurt to keep track of your brushing habits to make sure that you are getting the most of your brushing.

Invest In Your Oral Hygiene Products!

Products such as electric toothbrushes and water flossers can help you cover areas that you may have missed otherwise. The vibrating and rotation motions of an electric toothbrush remove plaque that could be missed with a traditional toothbrush. Water flossers deeply clean between the teeth to remove bacteria. Products like these are also great for those with limited mobility, as they require less motion to achieve cleaner teeth.

Visit Our Clinic Twice A Year

Achieving great oral hygiene takes consistent effort, but even if you’re brushing properly, there may be things that you miss. This is why it is important to see a dentist twice a year to spot things such as cavities, underlying problems and remove tartar buildup. Plaque that is not removed can turn into tartar over time, and removing tartar requires a dental professional.

Why You Should Consider Professional Dental Cleaning This Spring

15 Mar 2021 DENTAL

According to the Canadian Health Measures Survey (CHMS) conducted by Statistics Canada, a significant portion of the Canadian population has oral health problems requiring a professional’s attention. The most prevalent dental health problems among Canadians are untreated coronal cavities, tooth decay, and gum disease. However, no one needs to suffer from these oral health conditions as they are easily preventable with proper oral hygiene!

Spring Clean Your Smile!

Routine dental cleaning is essential to maintaining oral hygiene, and reduces the risk of oral health problems significantly. If your dental health has been neglected, now is a great time to get things back on track. As you thoroughly clean your home of cobwebs and dust this spring, don’t forget to take care of your smile! Take this time to schedule a visit to our Burnaby dental office for routine dental cleaning.

Why Routine Dental Examinations Are Important

Even with daily brushing and flossing, routine dental cleanings should be a crucial part of your spring hygiene routine. It’s almost impossible to remove all the plaque on your teeth with regular brushing. Over time, plaque build-up will turn into tartar. This can develop certain oral health conditions such as gingivitis. The only way to remove tartar is through professional dental cleanings.

How Stress Could Be Affecting Your Smile

16 Feb 2021 DENTAL

Stress is known to affect both physical and mental health. However, did you know that long-term stress can affect your smile? According to a study, people under a lot of stress can have more oral health complications. Our team has put together some of the most common oral problems that are linked to stress.

Gum Inflammation

If you’re going through a stressful time, you are more likely to neglect your oral hygiene. Therefore, you may have an increased risk of developing periodontal disease. Your body generates a hormone called cortisol when you are stressed. This hormone can be generated in the gums, and result in increased inflammation. Our Burnaby dentist, Dr. Sharma, will assess your mouth during your dental examination and treat any gum inflammation you may be experiencing.

Teeth Grinding

Teeth grinding, also known as bruxism, is a very common side effect of stress. This habit can occur unconsciously, such as when you are sleeping. Unfortunately this is not something you can control as grinding teeth is an involuntary reaction to stress, anger, and fear. Prolonged teeth grinding can lead to damaged teeth, jaw dropping, face pain, tight jaw muscles, and/or consistent headaches. If you’re expediting teeth grinding, we can provide you with a dental guard to help protect your teeth from damage.

Dry Mouth

Dry mouth can be uncomfortable, and is not good for your dental health. Saliva helps to neutralize acids in your mouth, and washes away food particles and bacteria. Your body can become more prone to acid reflux symptoms when you are undergoing intense stress. The acid can lead to less saliva production, and a dry feeling mouth. You’ll likely notice a bad taste, sticky feeling, and unpleasant odor when your mouth is excessively dry. This side effect is also likely to increase your risk of tooth decay and cavities. One of our dentists will provide you with more information on how to overcome dry mouth when you come in for your appointment.
