Smile, 2021 Is Here!

12 Jan 2021 DENTAL

According to a study by Health Canada, your teeth are the first thing people notice when they meet you. A healthy smile can go a long way in terms of making a good first impression. We understand that everybody wants that celebrity smile, but not everybody actually puts in the effort to achieve it! Even if you have bright and white teeth already, it is crucial that you take the necessary steps to maintain them.

Our team of dental professionals at Simply Wellness Dental Burnaby have put together a few tips to keep your smile bright and healthy this year.

Practice Good Oral Hygiene Routines

The most essential thing you can do to maintain your dental health is to practice good oral hygiene. Below is a brief summary of regular practices you should follow.

The primary foundation of oral hygiene is brushing your teeth. The best practice is to try and do so at least twice a day. Ideally, this should be the first thing you do in the morning and the last thing you do at night.

For best results, use a soft-bristled brush and toothpaste containing fluoride. Brush at a 45-degree angle, covering all the surfaces of your teeth as well as your tongue. When done, spit out the toothpaste, but don’t rinse immediately with water. Give the fluoride some time to work on your teeth. After about 15 minutes, you can use mouthwash or rinse it off with water.

Additionally, you should use floss once a day, preferably at night, to get rid of plaque in between your teeth.

Consider Healthier Snack Options

On top of sugary snacks, be aware of refined carbohydrates! When broken down by oral bacteria, savoury snacks might lead to other problems, including tooth decay. Instead, consider snacks such as carrots, apples, and celery. These are good options because their crunchy texture tends to give your teeth a little extra brush. We also recommend sugar-free sweets, yogurts, plain nuts, cheese, and oatcakes.

We all know that sugar is terrible for your teeth, but what about natural sugars found in fruits? According to a study by the International Journal of Pediatric Dentistry, fruits, either mashed or liquid, had no impact on tooth plaque pH.

Visit a Dental Clinic On A Biannual Basis!

Most dental problems, including cavities, can creep up without you experiencing any pain. This is why, for optimal oral health, regular visits to your dentist are highly recommended. We can help you identify any problems before they become worse.

Holiday Tips For Your Oral Health!

16 Dec 2020 DENTAL

December is here, and we are all excited for the upcoming holidays. This season is famous for celebration and feasting. While most of these food choices are sugary and pose a risk to your oral health, there are several things you can do to ensure your smile stays beaming even after the holidays are over. Here are a few healthy holiday tips from our team of dental professionals:

Make Tooth-Friendly Food Choices

There are many healthy food alternatives that you can consider and still have a delicious feast while maintaining your oral health. We suggest trying the following:

  • Consuming cheese, nuts, and raw vegetables as appetizers. Cheese and nuts contain beneficial properties that can help with your tooth enamel. Chewing raw vegetables helps to clean in between the teeth, as well as stimulate saliva, which washes away bacteria.
  • Serve a pumpkin pie! They are rich in vitamin C, which helps to keep gums healthy.
  • Prepare your meals with sesame oil, as it can reduce the effects of plaque. It can also help in fixing gums related issues.
  • Have fresh pears and plain yogurt in your meal plan. Fresh peers help neutralize the acid in the mouth, which causes decay-causing bacteria. Yogurt contains calcium, which strengthens teeth.
  • Avoid acidic foods. Acidic foods weaken your teeth’ enamel and gums, making your teeth exposed and vulnerable to decay. Skip red wine and other stain-causing foods this holiday when possible.

Drink A Lot Of Water

Drinking water throughout the day helps clean the food left in between the teeth that could attract bacteria. It also helps your body stay hydrated; thus, a healthy amount of saliva is produced in the mouth. Drinking fluoridated water is highly recommended to help strengthen your tooth enamel.

Practice A Good Oral Hygiene Routine

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, most of us will be celebrating the holidays in the comfort of our homes. With that being said, you can practice oral hygiene even more frequently! Remember to do the following at least twice a day

  • Brush your teeth and tongue for at least two minutes.
  • Use a fluoride toothpaste.
  • Floss your teeth gently, at least once every day.
  • Use mouthwash containing fluoride.

Consider Your Oral Health This Cold And Flu Season

15 Nov 2020 DENTAL

As the adage says, ‘seasons come and go’ — but that should not be true for your oral health. Despite the season, you need to be aware of the dos and don’ts to keep your smile healthy and happy!

Take Care Of Your Smile This Season

The cold and flu season is among us. However, this year, things are a bit more complex due to the COVID pandemic. Symptoms associated with colds and flus typically top the list of COVID symptoms, making it scary for anyone who is experiencing a common cold or flu. To help ensure you keep safe, stay home, limit social gatherings, wear a mask, and ensure you wash your hands often.

If you find yourself feeling under the weather this season, we recommend the following at-home remedies that will help get a smile back on your face, and make you feel better.

Stay Hydrated

Dry mouth or xerostomia due to dehydration can lead to tooth decay and cavities. Consistent hydration with water ensures production of saliva, hence the mouth remains hydrated and healthy. Additionally, saliva contains minerals and proteins that help protect and guard enamel from germs aiding in keeping bad breath away.

Buy Sugar-Free Lozenges

Sugar is widely known to be the prime contributor to cavities. Most lozenges contain sugar elements for sweetening hence the importance of being selective when picking a lozenge. If you’re experiencing a sore throat, we advise using sugar-free lozenges or candies. These lozenges may contain sorbitol, xylitol, and/or mannitol, which will help to protect your teeth from cavities. They contain enamel guarding properties that are not broken down by bacteria. They also stimulate saliva producing glands to produce more saliva, reducing mouth dryness.

Consistent Oral Hygiene

Oral hygiene is constantly stressed during dental appointments, and for good reasons.  Having good oral hygiene can help you with your overall oral health! When sick, we advise to continue your oral hygiene routine as normal, as well as keeping your toothbrush clean. Under no circumstances should you share your toothbrush with anyone as you can spread harmful bacteria and germs. Make it a habit of ensuring that you check for any blisters or blood when brushing. If you find an open wound, change your toothbrush.

A New Start To A Different School Year

16 Sep 2020 DENTAL

A new school year always feels like a fresh start. It’s an opportunity to get back into routine, reunite with friends and even learn a new thing or two. We understand that this school year is looking a bit different for kids across the country. No matter if your child is starting the school year online or in-person, we hope that they have a big and healthy smile on their face!

New School Year, Same Oral Health Routine

Just because your child is required to wear a face mask in school doesn’t mean that their oral health is no longer a priority! Even though your child’s smile is covered for the time being, remind them to always brush their teeth before school and before bed at a minimum. Make sure to explain the importance of good oral hygiene and how it can help prevent problems such as cavities. Parents can lead by example by inviting their child to brush their teeth at the same time. This way parents can also monitor how effective their child’s brushing is and give them some pointers if needed.

Face Masks In Schools

Some experts believe that there is a connection between the consistent use of face masks and dry mouth. An increase in dryness of the mouth can lead to buildup of bad bacteria and result in oral problems. Our team suggests trying to pack foods that will stimulate saliva production in your child’s lunch. This will help to help clean their teeth and keep their mouth moist while they’re in school. We recommend the following snacks:

  • Apple slices
  • Celery and/or carrot sticks
  • Watermelon
  • Soup
  • Sugar-free hard candies

Book Your Family’s Back-To-School Dentist Appointments

One of the best ways to stay on top of your family’s oral health is to book regular checkups with your dentist. If it’s been over 6 months since the last time you came in for a visit, please give us a call at +1 (604) 423-3737. How Oral Health Impacts Your Overall Health

15 Aug 2020 DENTAL

Good oral health is important when it comes to keeping your gums healthy and teeth strong. What you probably don’t know is that it also plays an important role in your overall health too. Problems with your oral health can negatively impact the rest of your body. Your mouth can also act as a gateway to the rest of your body and can tell your doctor a lot about the state of your overall health.

How Are Oral Health And Overall Health Connected?

Your mouth can act as an entry point for more than just food and drinks. Certain diseases and bacteria can also find their way into your body through your mouth as well. If you have an ongoing issue with gum disease, harmful bacteria in your mouth can start to enter your bloodstream and affect other parts of your body, such as your heart. According to WebMD, “by combing through 1,000-plus medical histories, researchers at the University of North Carolina School of Dentistry found that people with gum disease were twice as likely as others to die from a heart attack and three times as likely to have a stroke.

Please note that those who have HIV/AIDS or diabetes need to take extra precautions when it comes to their oral health as their body isn’t able to fight oral infections as effectively, which could make things worse.

How Can You Improve Your Oral Health?

The first rule of thumb to improving your oral health is to keep a consistent oral hygiene routine. You should brush your teeth with fluoride toothpaste twice a day for two minutes each time and floss at least once a day. There are a few other best practices you can follow if you want to optimize your oral health:

  • Use mouthwash after brushing your teeth.
  • Limit your sugar intake.
  • Replace your toothbrush every three months.
  • Visit your dentist on a biannual basis.
  • Check your mouth for any irregularities.
  • Avoid smoking tobacco.

Explore Invisalign Options In Burnaby

11 Jul 2020 DENTAL

Only 2-3% of adults who could benefit from an orthodontic appliance actually receive treatment. Why? Because the idea of traditional metal braces is just too objectionable for most adults. With the help of modern-day technology, Invisalign clear aligners offer our patients a more discreet and comfortable way to a healthy smile!

What is Invisalign?

Invisalign is an orthodontic treatment used to shift a patient’s teeth into alignment. Invisalign can help prevent pain when chewing and improve your overall smile with a series of clear plastic trays. With the help of 3D-printing technology, Invisalign clear plastic trays are custom-made to glide over your teeth and gums. Invisalign aligners have a smooth surface, free of any brackets or wires to provide our patients with maximum comfort during the treatment process. The best part is that Invisalign trays are removable, so your oral hygiene routine can continue as normal!

What Are The Benefits of Invisalign?

At Simply Wellness Dental Burnaby, Invisalign is a very popular treatment option for teenagers and adults because of the discreet appearance and convenience. As the name indicates, Invisalign clear aligners are designed to look nearly invisible and can often go undetected while wearing.

One of the biggest advantages of Invisalign aligners over other orthodontic treatment is that Invisalign trays are removable! You need to wear your Invisalign clear aligners for at least 22 hours a day, but you can still indulge in some sweet and delicious summertime treats without having to make any modifications. You can also play your favourite sports worry-free by just taking out your Invisalign trays!

Invisalign clear aligners can do more for you then just straighten out your smile. This orthodontic treatment can also help fix any bite issues, lower your chance of gum disease and improve your overall oral hygiene.

How A Dentist Near Me Can Help Prevent Gum Disease

When it comes to maintaining a healthy smile, most people work hard to keep their teeth beautiful but don’t pay much attention to their gums. Striving to keep your gums strong is an essential part of ensuring that your teeth look their best and that you don’t experience any serious oral health issues, such as gum disease. To keep your gums as healthy as possible, keep these helpful tips in mind.

Flossing Is A Must

If you want healthy gums, daily flossing is critical. This is because flossing is the only way to effectively remove bacteria that causes tartar. When tartar builds up on your teeth, it can’t be removed by brushing alone, and will inevitably lead to decay if left untreated. Flossing just once a day can make a huge difference in keeping your gums healthy.

Water Is Your Friend

Drinking water while you eat is an effective way to help your mouth remove food and bacteria that can stick to your teeth and cause decay. Additionally, water assists your mouth in producing saliva, which will help eliminate some of the bacteria hiding on your gum line as well.

Cut Back On Sugar

Eating foods that are filled with sugar is the fastest way to damage your teeth and gums.  Sugary foods tend to stick to the crevices of your teeth and are particularly difficult to remove. Instead of snacking on sweets, consider replacing sugary foods with healthy alternatives, such as cheese or nuts.

Listen To Your Mouth

If you’re at risk of developing gum disease, your mouth will usually tell you. Inflamed gums, bleeding after you floss, and a receding gum line are all signs that it’s time to visit your dentist. These could be the early symptoms of gum disease.

Don’t Skip Your Dental Checkups

Keeping your dental checkups every 6 months is the best way to prevent gum problems. Your dentist will be able to notice early warning signs of disease that you might not find until it’s too late. Professional cleanings two times a year also help fight decay from forming in the first place.

At Simply Wellness Dental in Burnaby, our trusted dental team is committed to helping your smile stay healthy and strong! If you think you may be exhibiting the early signs of gum disease or it’s time for your routine checkup, contact us today to schedule your appointment.
