Smile, 2021 Is Here!

According to a study by Health Canada, your teeth are the first thing people notice when they meet you. A healthy smile can go a long way in terms of making a good first impression. We understand that everybody wants that celebrity smile, but not everybody actually puts in the effort to achieve it! Even if you have bright and white teeth already, it is crucial that you take the necessary steps to maintain them.

Our team of dental professionals at Simply Wellness Dental Burnaby have put together a few tips to keep your smile bright and healthy this year.

Practice Good Oral Hygiene Routines

The most essential thing you can do to maintain your dental health is to practice good oral hygiene. Below is a brief summary of regular practices you should follow.

The primary foundation of oral hygiene is brushing your teeth. The best practice is to try and do so at least twice a day. Ideally, this should be the first thing you do in the morning and the last thing you do at night.

For best results, use a soft-bristled brush and toothpaste containing fluoride. Brush at a 45-degree angle, covering all the surfaces of your teeth as well as your tongue. When done, spit out the toothpaste, but don’t rinse immediately with water. Give the fluoride some time to work on your teeth. After about 15 minutes, you can use mouthwash or rinse it off with water.

Additionally, you should use floss once a day, preferably at night, to get rid of plaque in between your teeth.

Consider Healthier Snack Options

On top of sugary snacks, be aware of refined carbohydrates! When broken down by oral bacteria, savoury snacks might lead to other problems, including tooth decay. Instead, consider snacks such as carrots, apples, and celery. These are good options because their crunchy texture tends to give your teeth a little extra brush. We also recommend sugar-free sweets, yogurts, plain nuts, cheese, and oatcakes.

We all know that sugar is terrible for your teeth, but what about natural sugars found in fruits? According to a study by the International Journal of Pediatric Dentistry, fruits, either mashed or liquid, had no impact on tooth plaque pH.

Visit a Dental Clinic On A Biannual Basis!

Most dental problems, including cavities, can creep up without you experiencing any pain. This is why, for optimal oral health, regular visits to your dentist are highly recommended. We can help you identify any problems before they become worse.
