Tips for Handling Sugar

Sugar is everywhere, and it seems difficult to avoid! Whether it’s hidden in packaged snacks, or blatantly in front of us with a bowl full of candy – it seems inevitable to consume sugar. So how can we keep our oral health in good standing and watch our sugar intake? At Simply Wellness Dental – we’ve got a few tips for you!  

Choose healthy alternatives 

Eat nutritious foods such as vegetables or nuts. You can mix up your work snacks with fresh veggies and hummus, or try some raw almonds. These snacks are full of nutrients that will benefit your smile. An added bonus is that these healthy alternatives have been shown to boost immunity too! 

Keep your mouth clean

Maintaining good oral hygiene is important to fight off the effects of sugar. You should brush your teeth twice a day, floss daily. Don’t forget to use mouthwash too.

Drink lots of water

Water can make you full and prevent you from eating candy when you’re bored. It also helps wash away lingering sugar or food particles in your mouth. This will reduce your risk of developing cavities.

Monitor Sugar 

Read and inspect any packages carefully to understand what you are consuming. Sugar is often written as different names in ingredient lists. It can be called dextrose, fructose, glucose, maltose, galactose… the list goes on! 

Remove Temptations

Try not to keep candy, juice or sugar-filled snacks in your home. When they are easily accessible, you’ll be more tempted to consume them! If you do allow yourself to indulge, try to limit the treat to one sitting. This will help avoid constantly consuming sugar all day, which can lead to cavity development.
